Zhiyun Lei’s practice began with photography and moving image, and has gradually developed into a spatial artistic method centred on the concept of the 'tunnel'. Since The Ceiling Is on Fire, he no longer understood the image as a form of representation confined to a flat surface. Instead, he situates projected images, installations, virtual reality, and generative imagery within specific sites, allowing space itself to become the structure, medium, and narrative mechanism of the work.
In his practice, the 'tunnel' is not a specific physical space but a continuously generative structure of experience: it connects different works while also organising the relationships between vision, the body, technology, and time. From Resurrection and Ascension to Resurrection: Failed Return, each work functions as a node within this passage. Audiences move through it, pause within it, and become disoriented, gradually re-perceiving the boundaries of reality through the interplay of image, site, and body.
